PDF Expert 5 - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekIf you use your iPhone or iPad for work, chances are you occasionally have a need to view, edit, annotate, and/or create a PDF file. There are many third-party mobile apps that allow you to open and view PDF files, as well as others that allow you to create PDF files from other document or file formats.

PDF Expert 5 by Readdle, however, offers a comprehensive toolset for working with PDF files from your iOS mobile device. For example, if you receive a PDF file via email, or otherwise import a PDF file into your smartphone or tablet, it’s easy to load it into PDF Expert 5, and then utilize this app’s powerful set of tools.

You’ll discover that PDF Expert 5 makes it easy to view a PDF file on your iPhone or iPad’s screen. At the same time, you’re able to edit the document, or annotate it using a virtual pen or highlighter. You can literally draw directly on the device’s screen using your finger or a stylus. You’re also able to fill in forms, virtually sign documents, and add virtual sticky notes to pages, for example.

If you’re using PDF Expert 5 with an iPad Pro, it works nicely in conjunction with the Apple Pencil stylus when it comes to writing, drawing, editing, or annotating within your document.

What’s more, PDF Expert 5 offers a straightforward user interface that minimizes onscreen clutter, yet allows you to have easy access to the app’s built in tools. Plus, as easy as it is to import PDF files in order to view, edit, or annotate them, it’s equally easy to export content and share it with others via email, iCloud, or Dropbox.

For security purposes, PDF files can be password protected and encrypted, or saved in a format that allows others to simply view the file without being able to alter it. Because this app utilizes the industry-standard PDF file format, the content you create, edit, or annotate is fully compatible with other PDF file viewer apps and software that runs on any computer or mobile device.

PDF Expert 5 - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekWhile PDF Expert 5 runs nicely on either an iPhone or iPad, viewing and working with content is much easier on an iPad, due to the larger screen size. What’s truly nice about this app are the collection of customizable tools used to annotate and edit content, as well as the vast selection of options available for managing and sharing PDF files.

A Mac version of PDF Expert by Readdle is also available ($19.99), and files can automatically be synced between various versions of the application.

In a nutshell, if you work with PDF files, PDF Expert 5 for the iPhone or iPad is a “must have” app that’s well-designed, powerful, and extremely reliable regardless of the length of your documents.

Create and Share Photo Collages On Multiple Social Media Services Using the “Layout From Instagram” App

iPhone / iPad

12+

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instagram LayoutThe Instagram app for the iPhone and iPad allows users to take, edit/enhance, and then share photos (one at a time) on the popular Instagram online-based service (which is a public forum for sharing photos).

One of the really awesome things about the official Instagram app, is the toolset that’s provided to quickly and easily edit and enhance photos. These tools are extremely powerful, yet very easy and intuitive to use, allowing you to dramatically alter and improve the appearance of an image within less than one minute, prior to publishing it online. It’s also possible to tag people in a photo, add a geo-tag to the photo (indicating where it was shot), and add a text-based caption (including hash-tags), before publishing the image online on the Instagram service.

Keep in mind, all photos published on Instagram are automatically cropped and displayed in a square shape format.

While the official Instagram app is ideal for editing/enhancing, and then sharing one image at a time, the app does not currently allow for multi-image collages to be created, saved, and then shared online. This is where the new Layout from Instagram app (created and published by Instagram) comes in handy.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instagram LayoutDesigned for the iPhone and iPad, Layout from Instagram allows users to select multiple images that are stored within their smartphone or tablet, and then group them together into a customizable collage that gets saved, and then shared as a single image.

After choosing the images and a collage format, it’s possible to rotate, mirror, flip, zoom in/out, resize, or reposition each image within the collage before saving it, and then sharing it via Instagram, Facebook, text message (using the Messages app), Facebook Messenger, Twitter, or email.

The Layout from Instagram app comes with 10 different college layouts built in, allowing users to display two, three, four, or up to nine images, and then customize each layout to best showcase the selected images. After the collage is created, and you’ve selected the option to publish it on Instagram, for example, the official Instagram app launches (assuming it’s also installed on your iPhone or iPad), and allows you to use that app’s image editing/enhancement and publishing tools.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instagram LayoutOn the plus side, Layout from Instagram is a free app that’s very easy to use. On the negative side, the app was first introduced in late-March 2015, and has had four updates, yet it continues to crash often on both an iPhone and iPad, which sometimes makes it rather frustrating to use. If the app consistently worked correctly, it would be an awesome and extremely useful app that’s ideal for sharing a small group of images as a single collage image.

The app seems to crash the most frequently if you’ve imported high-resolution images taken with a digital camera (with large file sizes associated with them), and then try to import those images into the Layout from Instagram app from the Photos app.

If you find that the app winds up crashing too often, based on the images you want to incorporate into your collages, there are other third-party apps that also work in conjunction with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, for example, that allow you to create customizable collages. You can find them easily by typing the search phrase “photo collage” into the App Store’s Search field.

In a nutshell, I love the idea behind Layout from Instagram, and I do recommend you try it. However, it would certainly be nice if Instagram fixed the crashing issue, and perhaps merged the collage creation functionality that the Layout from Instagram app offers directly into the official Instagram app.

Discover the new Apple Music service on your iOS mobile device.

As I began writing this, while sitting at my desk in Foxboro, Massachusettes, on June 30th at noon, and at this very moment, Apple’s Beats 1 global radio station has just launched in 100 countries around the world. Millions of people are currently listening to the same broadcast that is originating from Los Angeles.

Beats 1 is just one of the exciting new features that is changing how we can experience music, thanks to the new version of the Music app, that was released today as part of the iOS 8.4 update.

In the past, the Music app that comes bundled with all iOS mobile devices has provided a way for people to manage and enjoy their digital music library, and more recently, stream music from the Internet (for free) via iTunes Radio. Today, with the release of iOS 8.4 and the newly redesigned Music app, how we access, manage and enjoy our music has changed forever.

To update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8.4, launch Settings, tap on the General option, and then tap on the Software Update option. Make sure your mobile device is connected to a Wi-Fi Internet connection, and then follow the on-screen prompts.

When you launch the new Music app, along the bottom of the screen (on the iPad) are six command icons (five icons are displayed on the iPhone), which from left to right include: For You, New, Radio, Connect, Playlists and My Music. Here’s a rundown of what each of these new options can do:

  • For You – Based on the music preferences you select when launching the app for the first time, as well as your listening history, and past music purchases from the iTunes Store, the Music app recommends popular as well as new music you’d be interested in – including music from up-and-coming, unsigned artists and bands.
  • New – Pick a music genre, and then discover new music that’s available, plus access the Top Songs, Top Albums and Top Videos charts, as well as other interactive functions that will help you discover new music from around the world.
  • Radio – In addition to the now familiar iTunes Radio feature that allows you to choose your favorite music genre, song or artist, and then listen to customized streaming radio programming, today (June 30th) Apple launched Beats 1 – a global radio station that’s heard live in more than 100 countries. As part of the Apple Music service, you can stream this cutting-edge Internet radio station 24/7 from any iOS mobile device or your computer.
  • Connect – This feature offers an exciting new way for artists and bands to interact with their fans by directly uploading music, videos, photos and other content. Many popular and up-and-coming artists are already supporting this Connect feature and sharing exclusive content, which is available right now.
  • Playlists – Based on music you love, create and manage custom playlists on your own, or access pre-created playlists from others. If you subscribe to Apple Music, it’s now possible to create playlists that includes music you stream from the iTunes Store’s library of more than 30 million songs. It’s no longer necessary to own the music you want to add to your personal playlists.
  • My Music – Access and enjoy digital music you own, and that’s accessible from the Music app. This includes all music you’ve purchased from the iTunes Store.

The Music app also continues to support the optional iTunes Match service ($24.99 per year), which allows you to sync and access your entire digital music library, regardless of where the music was acquired from.

Stream the new Beats 1 radios station from almost anywhere in the world.

Stream the new Beats 1 radios station from almost anywhere in the world.

Using the Music app to manage your own digital music library continues to be free. However, to select and stream any music that’s available from the iTunes Store (on an unlimited basis), plus access some of the Music app’s other new features, you’ll need to subscribe to Apple Music ($9.99 per month, http://www.apple.com/music). Starting today, a free, three month trial is offered for this new service. Subscribe via the new version of the Music app.

One of the things you’ll discover when you begin using the new version of the Music app, is that is offers seamless integration with Apple Music and the iTunes Store, as well as your own digital music library, and music content stored within your iCloud account. Thus, your music is always available, on your iPhone, iPad, and/or iPod touch (using the Music app), and/or from your Mac or PC that’s running the new version of the iTunes software (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download).

Thanks to Apple Music, you can now stream and listen to any music whatsoever that’s offered by the iTunes Store, on an unlimited basis, and include any of this music within your personal playlists. This gives you instant access to more than 30 million songs – anytime and anywhere, as long as your mobile device or computer has an Internet connection.

When you stream music from the Internet, that content is not stored within your mobile device or computer. As a result of Apple Music and other online-based music services, streaming music is quickly becoming the preferred way for people to access and experience their favorite music.

Keep in mind, to fully utilize Apple Music and all of the new Music app features, your mobile device will need a continuous Internet connection (via Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection) in order to stream music, access music from your iCloud account, and tap into the Music app’s new Connect feature, for example.

To experience Apple Music, or gain new appreciation for your existing digital music library, while continuously learning about new music, check out the new Music app, and subscribe to the free trial of Apple Music. Never before has no much music from the past and present, from all music genres, and from musicians, recording artists and bands not yet signed to record labels, been so readily available at your fingertips.

Would You Spend 15 Minutes Ordering A Pizza? With the Domino’s App, You Might!

App Category: Dining
Compatibility: iPhone / iPad
Age Appropriateness: 16+
Price: Free (Pizza Purchases Required)
Overall Rating (Out of 5 Stars) * *

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Domino's Pizza AppJason Rich’s Featured App of the Week is typically dedicated to showcasing some of the best iPhone and iPad apps I come across. However, this review is a bit different. The other night, I was too lazy to make dinner, or even leave my house, so I downloaded the Domino’s Pizza app, with the goal of having a pizza delivered.

Typically, when you call your local Domino’s Pizza location, you can place an order by phone in one minute or less. I expected the app to work much the same way, but I was wrong.

Unfortunately, the Domino’s Pizza app is a frustrating and time consuming experience that contains bugs. When you first download and install the app, you need to create a user account. This takes several minutes. I discovered, however, the app doesn’t always remember your account information, even if you ask it to, so you may need to go through this process multiple times. (It’s frustrating.) The app does not support iCloud Keychain, so you need to manually type content into each account setup field.

Then, you need to remember to sign into the app each time you launch it, but the sign in button is much smaller than the options for the “Is This Order For Delivery or Carryout?” option that appears within the app’s opening screen.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Domino's Pizza AppIf, after several minutes, you manage to get to the actual ordering screen, you have additional on-screen options which are not too intuitive, since you can order a pizza from scratch, use a coupon offer, or select from a previous order. If you need to edit your order, this becomes a different hassle.

After I finally placed my order, the app submitted it to my local Domino’s location twice. As a result, I needed to call that Domino’s location to discuss the error, only to be told that “This happens all the time. We just ignore the duplicate orders.” Once an order is placed, you can track its status, if you’re too impatient to wait the “30 minutes or less,” for the pizza to be delivered.

While it’s possible to pre-pay for your order via a credit or debit card that you supposedly store within the app, it is not possible to add a tip for the driver. The automatically added “delivery charge,” as the app clearly states, does not go to the driver. So, when your pizza gets delivered, you still need to sign the paper-based credit card slip, and can then manually add a tip.

Ultimately, ordering my pizza took more than 15 frustrating minutes, and still required a phone call to Domino’s. This experience really made me wonder how Domino’s could release an app to their customers that is so poorly designed, unintuitive, and that contains known bugs. My recommendation is to skip using this app altogether. Either call your local Domino’s to place your order, or try the Pizza Hut or Papa John’s Pizza app.

Or, if you live in an area that supports it, I strongly recommend the Grub Hub app. It allows you to order food from many local restaurants (including establishments that do not typically deliver), and have your food delivered right to your door or hotel room. This is a healthier option that offers a much larger selection, and an enjoyable ordering experience.

Protect the Galaxy When Playing Star Wars Galactic Defense

Star Wars Galactic Defense App Review - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekIf you’re a Star Wars fan, you have an abundant of entertaining and challenging iPhone and iPad gaming options to choose from. Star Wars Galactic Defense, for example, allows you to choose your allegiance to the Light or Dark side, and then manage your forces as you protect a series of bases on various planets from the Star Wars universe. Yes, many of your favorite characters from the Star Wars films appear within the game, yet the game doesn’t really follow any specific storyline.

Instead, once you choose your allegiance, you’ll be transported to Tatooine, Hoth, Endor, Geonosis, Felucia or Kashyyk in order to defend one of 10 difference bases located on each planet’s surface.

While there is action within this game, your job is to strategically place several types of defensive towers (which are equipped with different types of weapons), and then as a battle to protect your base ensues, strategically upgrade those towers and their respective weapons.

Star Wars Galactic Defense App Review - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekAt the same time, you must manage the actions of the three Champions on your team. Each Champion will be one of the well-known characters from the Star Wars films (such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leah, Darth Vader, Darth Maul), whom you must direct during battles in an attempt to build up their respective experience levels, and equip them with more advanced fighting capabilities.

As you win battles and defeat your enemies, you’ll earn Galactic Credits that can be used to upgrade your towers and acquire Support Forces that can be called upon during battles.

What you’ll discover is that Star Wars Galactic Defense is all about managing resources, strategically placing towers, and controlling the whereabouts of your Champions during battles. Once a battle begins, it will include between six and 10 waves of enemy troops trying to get past your defensive forces in order to take over your base. Your goal is simply to stop these enemy forces in their tracks.

Each planet has 10 bases to defend. There are five different skill levels, so you’ll potentially be revisiting each base, on each planet, at least five times. This does cause a bit of repetition within the game.

Star Wars Galactic Defense App Review - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekYou’ll also find that many of the strategies you develop early on in regard to tower placement, for example, will work consistently throughout the game. Other less important strategies, such as the placement of troops and your Champions, will need to be adjusted slightly as you progress throughout each battle.

Overall, this is a well-balanced, entertaining, somewhat addicting and fun game to experience. The familiar Star Wars music is heard throughout the game, and the graphics are decent. You’ll see much more detail if you use the pinch and reverse-pinch finger gestures on the screen to zoom in and out.

Hard core Star Wars fans may be disappointed by the lack of storyline and the limited control players have when it comes to customizing their Champions. Ultimately, this is more of a strategy-based game with action-oriented elements.

Star Wars Galactic Defense App Review - Jason Rich's Featured App of the WeekStar Wars Galactic Defense is a free game, so it costs nothing to download, install and play. An Internet connection is required at all times. Keep in mind, there are in-app purchases you can acquire to speed up your progress and build up your fighting capabilities faster. Otherwise, you’ll need to wait out the resource replenishment timers built into the game as you run low on resources.

Ultimately, after playing Star Wars Galactic Defense for several hours, I found the game to be enjoyable, entertaining and somewhat challenging, although a bit repetitive.

The Instantly Framed App Makes Framing and Showcasing Images Taken with Your iPhone or iPad Very Easy

App Category:

Photography

Compatibility:

iPhone / iPad

Age Appropriateness:

18+

Price:

Free (In-App Purchases Required)

Overall Rating (Out of 5 Stars)

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instantly FramedLots of people enjoy taking pictures using their iPhone or iPad, and then editing and sharing those photos online. Fewer people realize, however, how easy it is to create prints from those digital images, and then frame them so they can be displayed on a wall in your home or office, for example.

The free Instantly Framed app serves one purpose. It allows you to select a photo, crop it, and then have it professionally printed, framed and shipped to your door ready for hanging.

To accomplish this, simply launch the app and select the photo you want printed and framed by tapping on the Tap To Add or Edit Image option that’s displayed in the center of the virtual frame.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instantly FramedThe Instantly Framed app allows you to select an image that’s stored within your iPhone or iPad (within the Photos app), or choose an image that’s stored online as part of your Instagram or Facebook account. You can also control the camera that’s built into your iOS mobile device and snap a photo to be edited and framed from within the app.

Next, choose the size of the image you want printed and inserted into the 12” by 12” frame. Your image size options include: 8” by 8”, 6” by 6”, 4” by 4”, 4” x 6” or 6” by 4”. Then, use a pinch motion to zoom the image in or out within the virtual frame, and/or use one finger to reposition the image within the frame.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instantly FramedKeep in mind, what you see within the virtual frame that’s displayed by the app is what your final image will look like once it’s printed and framed. When you’re ready, scroll downward and tap on the Add To Cart button in order to check out.

One convenient aspect of the Instantly Framed app is the flat-rate pricing that’s offered. Regardless of which options you choose, or how you customize your image, the price to have the image printed and professionally framed within a 12” by 12” wooden frame is $65.00 (which includes 3-day shipping).

Review your order when prompted, and then tap on the Check Out button to submit your order. This all happens within one to three minutes, and then within a few business days, your framed image will arrive at your door ready to be hung. It doesn’t get any easier!

For additional image editing and enhancement options, you can always use another photography app, such as Photos, Pixelmator, SnapSeed or Adobe Photoshop Express, for example, to work on the image before importing it into the Instantly Framed app.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Instantly FramedUsing Instantly Framed is fast, easy and extremely convenient. Plus, it’s affordable. The one drawback is that there are no options when it comes to choosing the wooden frame or frame size. All images are framed within a square, black color, wooden frame that measures 12” by 12” inches.

What’s nice about this lack of options, however, is that you can have multiple images framed separately, and then display them together on a wall (and create a personalized pattern with the matching frames, based on how you hang them) in order to create a visually impressive in-home (or office) display to showcase your favorite images.

Be sure to visit the company’s website (www.instantlyframed.com) to obtain discounts offered when you order two or more framed images at the same time.

The New Post-It Plus App Allows You To Digitize Your Handwritten Sticky Notes Using Your iPhone or iPad

App Category:

Productivity / Business

Compatibility:

iPhone / iPad

Age Appropriateness:

18+

Price:

Free

Overall Rating (Out of 5 Stars)

* * * *

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Post-It PlusPost-It sticky notes have been a popular office supply used as an organizational tool since 1980. It’s common to see someone’s desk, cubical wall or computer monitor littered with these brightly colored sticky notes to remind them of important to-do items, calls to make, or other essential tidbits of information.

Thanks to the iPhone and iPad, and the new Post-It Plus app from the 3M Company, there’s a new way to store, organize and share the notes that you’ve handwritten on individual sticky notes. While there are many apps that replace the traditional paper-based Post-It Notes, and recreate them in digital form on the smartphone or tablet’s screen, the Post-It Plus app takes a different approach that allows users to keep handwriting their notes on brightly colored Post-It sticky notes.

Using the camera that’s built into your iPhone or iPad, the Post-It Plus app allows you to photograph up to 50 square Post-It Notes at a time, digitize them so they can be displayed on your device’s screen, and then reorganize them on virtual boards, in whatever order you’d like.

It’s then possible to share the scanned Post-It Notes with others. The scanned notes can also be imported into other popular apps, such as Evernote, or stored within a cloud-based file sharing service, such as Dropbox, Box or OneDrive.

Jason Rich's Featured App of the Week: Post-It PlusThe Post-It Plus app app is easy to use. Create your handwritten notes on square Post-Its, just as you normally would. Then, place the sticky notes in groups on a wall, table or flat surface, and organize them however you’d like.

Next, launch the free Post-It Plus app on your iPhone or iPad, and tap on the screen to turn on the device’s rear-facing camera. Using the camera, photograph one Post-It Note at a time, or capture up to 50 separate square sticky notes in a single shot.

The app automatically isolates each sticky note within a photo, digitizes its contents, and displays the now virtual notes on your device’s screen. At this point, you can move your individual notes around, and organize them into groups or patterns. If you created your notes using different colored, square Post-It sticky notes, the colors will be retained when each note is digitized and imported into the app.

Using the Post-It Plus app allows you to capture digital versions of your handwritten sticky notes, reorganize them, display them on virtual boards in groups, and store them within your iPhone or iPad, where they can be viewed anytime. However, the app also allows you to archive your notes or easily share them with others by first exporting the digital files into a popular file format, such as PDF.

If you’re already an avid user of Post-It Notes, the Post-It Plus app allows you to better manage the important information (or drawings) on those individual notes, without having to carry around or share many separate sticky notes. The app is great for organizing information, keeping track of ideas generated during brainstorming sessions or meetings, or for managing ideas or to-do items you’ve written down on individual Post-It notes.
